Check, even when lights are in your favour

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

IN THE discussion over the recent fatal Ferrari accident, we have failed to learn some valuable lessons.

Silence those noisy engines

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

AFTER moving into what we thought was a peaceful and quiet estate - Bukit Panjang - our family was sorely disappointed.

Conduct safety checks on playgrounds

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

CHILDREN'S playgrounds today are very different from those in the 1980s.

IT IS indeed encouraging that more motorists in Singapore are installing cameras in their vehicles ('More say aye to 'eyes' in vehicles'; Thursday).

Train announcements must be accurate

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

TRAIN operator SMRT must give accurate information when making public announcements.

Fostering better ties between teachers, students and parents

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

A FRUSTRATED teacher is more likely to say 'Why are you so slow?' rather than 'I am frustrated that you have not understood the topic.' The former would solicit no response from the student while the latter invites feedback.

Sorry for miscommunication

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

WE REFER to Mr Jairam Amrith's feedback ('Who owns a mortgaged property's valuation report?'; Thursday).

1.Mr Jack Yong: Train announcements must be accurate.

My Point

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

WELL done, Straits Times, for the new look. I particularly like 'The News In 5 Minutes' section. I have read almost every issue of ST since 1968 (when I was 11 years old). When there is no publication on the day after certain public holidays, I feel that something is missing.

Oil prices down, but pump prices still high

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

OIL prices have dropped by an average of 10 per cent since April, but the prices of petrol and diesel, as well as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for home use, have not seen a similar decrease.

Have job ad section for those hiring retirees

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

I HAVE met several retirees who worked as professionals, managers, executives and technicians.

Doors shut for older Singaporeans

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

I AGREE with Mr Yeow Hwee Ming ('Have job-placement agency for older workers'; Forum Online, Wednesday) that prejudice against older professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) is entrenched in companies and job agencies in Singapore.

Why senior's motor policy was not renewed: Great Eastern

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

WE THANK Mr Sinnathamby Dhanabalasingham for his letter ('Senior's motor policy: Great Eastern rejected, Income accepted'; Wednesday) .

Perpetual securities: Alerts from MAS should be timely

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

PERPETUAL securities have been in the market for some time now, and media reports have explained the differences between them and regular bonds, so it is puzzling that the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has decided to issue an alert only now ('Note key risks in perpetual securities, MAS cautions'; Thursday).

Install video cameras in all taxis

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) should consider requiring taxi operators to install video recorders in all cabs ('More say aye to 'eyes' in vehicles'; Thursday).

Step up checks on them

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

I AGREE with Mr Roy Lim ('Heed DPM Teo's remarks, introduce special licence'; yesterday) on the need to have a special licensing category for supercar drivers. My observation is that supercars are usually driven for leisure and to test out their speeds. Those who buy such cars are unlikely to keep to speed limits here.

Unfair to target them

Sat, 19.May.2012 - 6:00am

MR ROY Lim ('Heed DPM Teo's remarks, introduce special licence'; yesterday) called on the Traffic Police to have separate licensing for drivers of supercars, using the current licensing scheme for motorcycles as an example. He also compares driving a supercar to riding a motorcycle with a larger engine capacity.

Impose more property cooling measures now

Fri, 18.May.2012 - 6:00am

WHILE Europe is in the middle of a financial crisis ('Hollande off to Berlin for crisis talks'; Wednesday), Singapore is registering the strongest private home sales in nearly three years ('New private home sales in April shoot up to 3-year high'; Wednesday).

Poor bus service at Woodlands interchange

Fri, 18.May.2012 - 6:00am

ON WEDNESDAY morning, several commuters at Woodlands Interchange were late for work, including me.

Honest stranger

Fri, 18.May.2012 - 6:00am

I THANK an honest stranger who returned my lost Braun Buffel wallet to the Clementi Police Station earlier this month, as well as the Crystal Jade bakery staff at Toa Payoh Hub, especially manager Yvonne and the counter staff, who helped me after I lost my wallet.
